Write a Resume With a Unique Accent
Write a Resume With a Unique AccentWriting a resume is an important part of any job search, but if you want it to stand out and catch the attention of recruiters, you'll need to be a little more creative with your resume. It's easy to think about how you'll change or improve upon your existing resume by making it a bit more unique and interesting to the eye, but when you take that first step, you should also think about how you can add an accent to it.Making your resume unique and different from the other resumes you see is usually an easy task; it just requires some research and preparation. But creating an accent, or at least a more unique one, can actually add a good amount of flair to your resume, even if it doesn't quite fit the description you were looking for. The key to creating a great resume, whether you are applying for a job with a local business or in the city, is to find a way to make it unique, adding a unique touch that will catch the eyes of recruiters and that will stand out among the rest. One simple way to do this is to choose a particular aspect of the resume to highlight or to focus on. For example, a person who has applied for a position that needs to include information about work experience and education, such as a healthcare administrator, might consider including information about their education in a certain school or what they studied in order to get their current job. If you are applying for a business position, you could think about adding a line to show your business expertise. However, regardless of what your job requirements are, the fact that you have more than one job you've held can be a very telling trait. In addition to showcasing your education, experience and work experience, it is also a good idea to include an aspect that can be considered an accent. For example, if you have had a good deal of experience in certain fields and if you have a background in one of these fields, it would be an excellent way to try and establi sh a sense of personality.Of course, if you can't find a specific area of the resume that you are trying to highlight, there are still several ways to find a way to make your resume stand out. One good place to start is with the cover letter. Always be sure to write a good first impression. Always make sure that you emphasize your strengths and your unique qualities to show a more realistic picture of who you are.Another way to make your resume stand out is to use the personal statement. A well-written personal statement will speak a lot about you and what your goals are. Try not to overdo it with all the details of your education and your skills and accomplishments, however, you will be surprised how much attention can be drawn to a well-written personal statement.Once you have chosen your resume and sent it in to the company, always remember to use the resume for more than just as an advertisement. Your resume can speak volumes about who you are and how you have managed to get to where you are now. Remember that you will need to keep working hard to continue to improve your resume and when you do, it will increase the chance that you will find a job that is perfect for you.

The Power of an Old Girls Club - Work It Daily
The Power of an Old Girls Club - Work It Daily I donât need to cite statistics that prove senior management teams in corporate America have far more men in them than women. In fact, most of us, at some point, have heard the term, âOld Boys Club,â used to describe the way a companyâs professional advancement works at the highest level. What I do want to talk about is the debate around the idea , in spite of proof it works for men, women canât seem to get their act together and form power groups of their own. A Dirty Little Secret â" Women Like to Tear Each Other Down MSNBC career columnist, Eve Tahmincioglu wrote this very insightful piece called, âWomen Still Reluctant to Help Each Other.â In it, studies and expert interviews indicate things like jealousy and lack of time are making the development of an equally valuable, âOld Girls Club,â pretty challenging. The biggest shocker to me? Men are better mentors than women. It appears they do a more effective job because: A) They have greater experience mentoring and being mentored in their careers. B) They have more confidence in their ability to provide value as a mentor. Wow! That hurts to hear. I guess I was lucky. Early on in my career, I got hired by a company with a large, strong group of women mentors. The HR department had 16 people in it; 15 women and 1 token guy. The head of HR was a very confident and charismatic woman. Ironically, I remember feeling nervous when I accepted the job offer about being part of a predominantly female team for the same reasons outlined in Tahminciogulâs article â" I thought theyâd be petty and mean. I was wrong! To this day, itâs the most supportive team environment Iâve ever been in. Truth is told, Iâm still very close to many of my colleagues from that job, Yep, Iâll admit it: Iâm part of a top-notch âOld Girls Club.â McGraw-Hill Gets the Benefits of an âOld Girls Clubâ In 2003, a small group of senior women - Connie Bennett, Sari Factor, Michelle Ferguson and Vickie Tillman â" found themselves talking about what women need to succeed in corporate America and wanting to make a difference for women where they all worked: The McGraw-Hill Companies. From that initial conversation, and countless hours of hard work, the Womenâs Initiative for Networking and Success (WINS) was born. (They even convinced the male-dominated executive team to fund the effort!) As a result, the program has exploded and now boasts over 24 chapters and 3,676 members worldwide. Last month, I was invited to attend the WINS leadership conference in NYC. They gave me an award for my work with their Dubuque, IA chapter that included a $5,000 donation to my favorite charity, the Make-A-Wish Foundation. (A special congrats to Iowa co-chairs, Jill Meloy and Lisa Gottschalk. Their chapter won the WINS excellence award two years in a row!) At the podium, I turned to face a room of 100+ professional women â" all smiling members of this widely successful program. I was so overcome by the moment, I started to cry. How girly, huh? And yet, I donât think I would have shed tears if it was a room full of men, or even a mixed crowd. I also donât think I would have gotten weepy if I had sensed they were the kind of women that like to knock each other down. I already knew from working with the Iowa chapter they were sincere in their desire to see women succeed professionally. It was an âOld Girls Clubâ environment at its best! The Secret to Success? As the Song Goes... R-E-S-P-E-C-T I spent the next two days observing conference workshops and meeting WINS members from all over the country. One thing was clear: These women respected the WINS program and its ability to help them move up in the company. They had powerful guest speakers that included the Governor of New Jersey, Christine Todd Whitman, and NY Times CEO, Janet Robinson. They openly discussed why women avoid leadership roles for reasons like fear of failing, or the impact it might have on their relationships and family lives. In short, they bonded like crazy and left confident in their ability to succeed. Not every company can start a program like McGraw-Hillâs WINS, but every female who wants to advance their career can try to find a local womenâs professional group and get active in it. If you canât find one, then join one on-line. Better still, create your own. And, as you get more involved, remember this secret to success: Powerful âOld Girls Networksâ have members who sincerely respect and embrace the concept of women helping other women. They act as role models â" which reminds me, I get to end this piece with some good news. Modeling the way should be easy for us ladies. Why? As it turns out, being good role models in the workplace is something Tahminciogluâs research says us females are actually better at than men! Iâd love our readerâs thoughts and experiences (good and bad) with this. Tell us your stories by posting them below. Are women helping women where you work? And, for any of you men reading, whatâs your take? Do you see women helping or hurting each othersâ careers at your office? J.T. Here is how you nail a job interview and a date according to psychologists
Here is how you nail a job interview and a date according to psychologistsHere is how you nail a job interview and a date according to psychologistsJob interviews and first dates share the same panic-inducing conundrum How do I convince this stranger that Im bedrngnis an incompetent psychopath in under 10 minutes?Thankfully, likability is a science one several psychologists have been hacking at for decades. Here are a few words of insight from certified social etiquette mavens.Impression managementFrom personal experience, I can confirm that there are zero benefits to being a self-effacing, dim-witted ball of nerves. But despite popular belief, an overt vorfhrung of aptitude doesnt do us any favors either. At least according to a recent studypublished in the Journal Basic and Applied Psychology.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe study makes a point notlage to confuse over-conf idence with arrogance. Arrogance is a quality universally understood to be off-putting. Confidence in ones abilities and attributes is a pretty important ingredient to success, but how we express it is also crucial. The author of the study, psychologist Janina Steinmetz says, presenting our achievements, whether on a first date or a job interview, without explaining exactly how we went about achieving them can leave a bad taste in the receptors mouth.Expounding on the process that led us to success, at once highlights our capabilities and drive, while also opening avenues of relatability. It sends a message of My success was staffed by my hard work and dedication, not born out of my magnificent God-given talent.Steinmetz put together three experiments Two were mock job interviews and one was a mock date. On the topic of impression management, all respondents agreed to be negatively impacted by an over-eagerness to imply competence.Charm is all about being human, which Steinmetz point s out is not always glamorous. Nevertheless, conveying struggle is sure to win people over, especially as the prelude to declarations of victory.Body Language and PresentationA Career Builder survey of hiring managers from 2013 broke down the way colors influence the impressions gathered by potential employers. Black, blue, gray and brown were shown to convey a sense of professionalism and leadership, while light colors like blue advertised an employee thats a team player. Louder colors like yellow, green and pink insinuate creativity.Whatever virtue you wish to suggest through your wardrobe, be sure the presentation is on point-no wrinkles, no stains. As stylist Nicole Russo saysNot knowing how to pull yourself together comes across as incompetent.Once you have your attire figured out, you should give some heed to what you wish to get across with your movements and gestures. Very Well Mindreports that body language accounts for between 50 to 70% of all communication. Its all about nuance. The piece, medically reviewed by Steven Gans MD, goes on to state that a trustworthy face is indicated through a slight smile and a subtle raise of an eyebrow. Most of the physical gestures and their emotional association mentioned in the article are fairly common knowledge, but it still serves as a helpful reminder to be ever aware of them. In 2018 a career builder report revealed that 67 of the 2,500 employers surveyed cited insufficient eye contact as the predominant reason for not hiring potential employees. What to say and how to say itTomas Chamorro-Premuzic is an author whos expertise belongs to psychology and leadership strategies. A little while back he wrote a piece instructing young professionals on how to better answer the stock questions employers love so much, namely the dreaded Tell us some of your weaknesses?Eagerness and panic become the devil and slightly more pathetic devil on our shoulders, causing us to spout out rigid lies, or pedantic cheeseball lines li ke My weakness is Im too punctual.Premuzic, emphasizes how important it is whatever your answer is, lie or truth (preferably truth), to not sound too rehearsed.Previously connected studies have shown that verbal and non-verbal communication that seems authentic is linked to positive perceptions. Premuzic says, The more prepared you seem, the less credit they will be able to take for asking the question (which equates to making them feel less competent), and the less truthful your answer will seem.To that point, while it is more beneficial to be honest than to tell abald-faced lie, interviewees shouldnt be too honest. The primary reason employers hurl the weakness inquiry at us is because they want to observe our ability to convincingly portray self-awareness and false modesty.
